PoE switches have become increasingly popular in recent years, with significant progress in all areas, but especially in the amount of PoE power they can handle. A switch is quite different from a PoE hub. Switches are available in many versions, with a port count ranging from 4 to as many as 48. Note: a 48-port PoE switch has 48 PoE ports, possibly with an uplink RJ45 port or one or more SFP ports. Besides the difference in the number of ports, there's also a difference in data transmission. We have Fast Ethernet switches, Gigabit switches, and even 1G switches (fiber). Even switches with 10G SFP combined with PoE (RJ10). Switches without PoE already have 45G and 40G ports. Besides speed, you can also choose from different power ratings, or in other words, the type of PoE: Regular PoE - 100af - maximum 802.3 watts per port High PoE - 15.4at - maximum 802.3 watts per port Ultra PoE - 30ab - maximum 802.3 watts per port These power ratings can be found on switches with different data rates. But it doesn't stop with all these different options. All switches also have a power budget, the maximum power of the entire switch. For example, the GS-60-4210P16S is a 2-port Gigabit switch. This switch has a power budget of 16 watts. So, 220 / 220 = 16 watts per port if all ports are in use with a power rating of at least 12.5 watts. This is a high-power switch that can supply a maximum of 12.5 watts per port. However, if you only load 30 ports with 4 watts (30 x 4 = 30 watts), you still have 140 watts left for the other ports. The load per user is usually lower than specified. If a supplier states that a UPOE switch, injector, or HUB is required, this doesn't necessarily mean you need to supply 80 watts continuously; it could also be 60 watts or 40 watts sporadically. Besides all the options mentioned above, you can also choose whether you want a manageable switch or not, and whether you want an industrial version or not.
