De PoE switches hebben de laatste jaren een enorme vlucht genomen, er is veel vooruitgang geboekt op alle vlakken maar vooral op het te voeren POE vermogen. Een switch is weer wat anders dan een POE HUB. De Switches zijn in veel uitvoeringen beschikbaar. Het aantal poorten varieert van 4 tot wel 48 poorten. Let wel!! een 48-poorts POE switch heeft dus 48 POE poorten, met daarnaast eventueel nog een uplink RJ45 poort of 1 of meerdere SFP poorten. Naast een verschil in het aantal poorten is er het verschil in datatransmissie. We hebben Fast Ethernet switches, Gigabit switches en ook al 10G switches (fiber). Zelfs al switches met 10G SFP in combinatie met PoE (RJ45). De switches zonder POE beschikken al over 40G en 100G poorten. Naast de snelheid kunt u ook een keuze maken uit verschillende vermogens, of te wel een keuze in het type POE: Normale POE - 802.3af - maximaal 15.4 Watt per poort High PoE - 802.3at - maximaal 30 Watt per poort Ultra PoE - 802.3ab - maximaal 60 Watt per poort Deze vermogens kunt u bij de Switches met verschillende datasnelheden vinden. Maar het houdt niet op bij al deze verschillende opties. Alle Switches hebben ook nog een power-budget, een maximaal vermogen van de gehele Switch. Bijvoorbeeld de GS-4210-16P2S is een 16 poort Gigabit Switch. Deze Switch heeft een power-budget van 220 Watt. Dus 220 / 16 = 12.5Watt per poort als alle poorten in gebruik zijn met een vermogen van minimaal 12.5 watt. Het betreft hier een High Power switch die dus per poort maximaal 30 Watt kan leveren. Maar, als u slechts 4 poorten met 30 Watt belast (4 x 30 = 140 Watt) dan heeft u voor de andere poorten nog 80 watt over. Meestal valt de belasting per gebruiker lager uit dan de opgave. Als een leverancier roept dat er een UPOE switch of injector of HUB nodig is dan betekent dit nog niet dat u ook echt 60 Watt continu moet leveren, het kan ook 40Watt zijn of 60Watt sporadisch. Naast al de bovenstaande mogelijkheden kunt u ook nog kiezen of u een Switch wilt hebben die u kunt managen of niet en of u een industriële uitvoering wilt of niet. Dit alles voor een goede Planet PoE Switch met een overvloed aan keuzes.
